Little Elm High School students, along with parents or guardians, are invited to hop on a 55-passenger charter bus and travel to a university preview day. College Road Trippin' happens one time in the fall and one time in the spring. Tickets are $10 round-trip per person.
Keisha Brown, District K-12 College Readiness Coordinator, had an idea to somehow make a trip to a college campus affordable for families to visit college campuses. "I opened it up to all high school students. What this does is give busy families, or even families who couldn't otherwise afford a trip, an opportunity to have the experience," said Brown.
In Fall 2017, Little Elm ISD College Road Trippin' went to Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. Since then the group tour opportunity has made stops in Lubbock at Texas Tech University and Texas A&M University in College Station.
On a day when sophomores and juniors take their PSAT test, freshmen at LEHS are bussed to college campuses in the Metroplex to start experiencing college! College admission representatives and current college students lead the LEHS freshman on tours around the campus, as well as provide an admission presentation. The students eat lunch inside the college dining hall and are able to buy college swag as a memento of the day.
The first Freshman College Tour was in the fall 2016, students visited Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, Texas Woman's University, University of North Texas, Texas Wesleyan, Austin College, and Texas A&M at Commerce. In fall of 2017, the tour expanded to include Midwestern State University, Tarleton State University, The University of Texas at Dallas as well as the University of North Texas at Dallas.
Instant Decision Days at LEHS
It's rare to have college admissions representatives come to a high school to review student applications. That's the idea behind Instant Decision Days. Admissions representatives from a college or university meet with LEHS students, then review their application and accept them on the spot! Some students are even offered merit scholarships on the spot!
Texas Tech University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Midwestern State University, Texas Woman's University, and The University of North Texas have all hosted Instant Decision Days at Little Elm High School.
